Title : Integrated reservoir characterisation and production optimisation of the Bedum Gas Field

Abstract:

This project presents an integrated study of the Bedum Gas Field located in the northeastern Netherlands, aiming to evaluate past performance and identify opportunities for enhanced gas recovery. The field produces from the Permian Rotliegend Sandstone, deposited in a desert environment and trapped structurally by normal faulting, with effective sealing provided by Zechstein salt. Petrophysical evaluation of five wells indicates good to moderate porosity, adequate permeability for gas production, and generally low water saturation, confirming the presence of productive reservoir intervals. Interpretation of 3D seismic data delineated reservoir boundaries and identified approximately fourteen normal faults, forming the basis for a detailed structural model. A static reservoir model was constructed, incorporating structural frameworks and 3D gridding to distribute porosity, permeability, and water saturation. The gas–water contact was identified at approximately 3012 m, with the Gas Initially In Place estimated at about 25 × 10⁹ m³. The static model was subsequently converted into a dynamic simulation model, subjected to quality control and history matching, which demonstrated that gas expansion drive is the dominant production mechanism. Production analysis shows that nearly 95% of the reserves have been recovered, with peak production achieved in 2007 and continued production forecast until 2047. Development scenarios indicate that additional infill wells could further enhance recovery. Drilling engineering design, performed using Landmark software, emphasizes safe well placement while minimizing risks associated with fault uncertainty. Economic evaluation based on cash flow analysis confirms that new drilling options remain economically viable. Overall, the integrated geological, geophysical, reservoir, and economic modeling approach provides reliable results and supports the potential for future optimization of the Bedum Gas Field
