Title : A novel integrated framework catalyst synthesized (Karalite-A) and applied for biodiesel synthesis at room temperature

Abstract:

Repeated usage of cooking oil is a hazard to health due to the free radical formation during reuse. So the used cooking oil to biodiesel conversion through transesterification reaction is a solution for the effective utilization of cooking oil. The conventional method of biodiesel synthesis has many drawbacks such as time consumption, product separation difficulties which makes the process expensive. To rectify all these issues, and to synthesize biodiesel at lower cost, need an effective catalyst for the biodiesel synthesis. I this view, integrated framework of AlPO4-Cristobalite (orthorhombic), CoAl2O4 (Cubic), and Co2P2O7 (monoclinic) catalyst is synthesized at room temperature.

The novel integrated framework material is named as Karalite-A. It is stable upto 1200 oC and has three types of nanosized pores with a diameter of 3, 5 and 18 nm. It is an acidic solid material (1.06 mmol/g). This acidity will not cause any environmental pollution and corrosion. The total conversion of the reaction at 50 oC is 82%. The conversion at room temperature is 70% at 1 hour and the remaining 12 % is at 50oC. In the Karalite-A framework, monoclinic Co2P2O7 is active at room temperature. So the 70% of conversion is caused by the monoclinic crystal system of Co2P2O7 and the remaining 12% is due to the other two frameworks. The integrated framework, thermal stability, Pore characteristics and acidity are confirmed by XRD, TGA, BET and Chemisorption studies respectively. There is no pore blockage in this catalyst during the reaction. So, we can run the reaction in batch method without regeneration of the catalyst.
