Title : Enhancing integrity and safety: Flare tip inspection strategies in offshore environments

Abstract:

Flare systems are critical safety components in offshore oil and gas operations, designed to safely combust excess hydrocarbons during normal operations and emergency scenarios. In the harsh offshore environment, flare tips are subjected to extreme thermal and mechanical stresses, making their inspection and maintenance a vital aspect of asset integrity management. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of flare tip inspection strategies employed across ADNOC Offshore facilities, highlighting recent innovations, operational challenges, and lessons learned from field applications. The inspection of flare tips in offshore settings poses unique challenges due to limited accessibility, high elevation, and continuous operation requirements. Traditional inspection methods, such as visual inspection and ultrasonic thickness measurements, have been the cornerstone of integrity evaluations.

To overcome accessibility constraints and enhance safety, ADNOC Offshore has increasingly adopted UAV drone inspection technologies which reduce inspection time by 80%. These unmanned aerial systems provide high-resolution imaging and thermal data without requiring shutdowns or scaffolding. Drone inspections have proven particularly effective in facilities like Zirku Island, where Flares exhibited signs of thermal degradation, pilot damage, and structural cracks. Despite operational constraints, drones enabled timely assessments and informed maintenance decisions. We shifted from days of inspections to only hours. However, challenges remain in ensuring consistent report quality and coordinating with service providers. In conclusion, flare tip inspection in offshore facilities is a multidimensional challenge that requires a blend of traditional techniques, innovative technologies, and strategic planning. ADNOC Offshore’s experience demonstrates the value of continuous improvement, cross-functional collaboration, and technology adoption in safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring operational excellence
