Title : Production of de-aromatized solvents for the first time in the history of Indian refining sector

Abstract:

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is a pioneer in manufacturing and marketing of specialty solvents for various applications all over the country. For the 1st time in the history of Indian Refining sector, BPCL Mumbai Refinery (MR) achieved a ground-breaking milestone by successfully producing various grades of De-aromatized Solvents (DAS) viz. D40, D80, D100, D110 & D130. DAS products are very close-cut distillation cuts, classified based on their flash point. DAS products are specially formulated low sulphur solvents, free from aromatics and unsaturated hydrocarbons, odorless and clear liquids. This project is innovative not only because these DAS products were produced for the 1st time in India, in Mar 2023, but also because these products are being produced from the world’s first Dual Dividing Wall Column, operating under vacuum. DAS products, which were earlier imported, are used typically in metal (Bearing, Auto Ancillary industries etc.), paint, printing industry, in household liquid vaporizer (mosquito repellents), aerosols, drilling fluids, adhesives, sealants, ink cleansing agents, detergents, rust preventive formulations, resins and polishing, as a substitute for chlorinated solvents etc. wherein de-aromatized solvents are being used as a solvent media. 200 TMTPA unit is designed to produce very low aromatics solvents, with quality (0.03 - 0.05 % wt.) much superior to the import substitute (0.10 % wt.), making it free of carcinogenic effects and suitable for household applications. With the commissioning of the state-of-the-art facility, BPCL MR is proud to showcase “First of its kind, Make in India” De-aromatized Solvents with stringent specifications for niche applications, produced from its Hydrocracker complex.
