Title : Developed the wellbore stability geomechanics workflow and integrating the results into the daily drilling workflow, case studies for 2 development fields from WDDM, Egypt

Abstract:

Introduction:
The west Delta Deep Marine Concession is located on the northwestern margin of the Nile Delta, approximately 90km offshore. Agreement was awarded to the Contractor Group BG International (currently Shell), 50% and Edison (currently PICL (Egypt) 50%) in 1995. Burullus Gas Company, on behalf of the partners, is the Joint Operating Company for all exploration and development activities within the WDDM Concession. Multiple 3D seismic surveys, Since 1998, +20 successful E&A wells were drilled, Also, Since 2003, +70 Development and workover wells were drilled.

The wells have discovered and developed significant quantities of gas in a number of fields named Scarab, Saffron, Simian, Sienna, Sapphire, Sequoia, Saurus, Silva and Serpent. In addition to a number of smaller satellites around these fields, while many successful wells have been drilled in the concession, several wells experienced drilling challenges that highlighted the importance of accurate geomechanical characterization during well planning.

Study Summary
Developed the workflow of the predrill wellbore stability model and integrating the results into the daily drilling workflow is conducted to tackle existing non-productive time costs and enhanced the well design, by deepening the conductor casing, and success to save a casing in silva-Da well.

The added in the workflow

  • Study the retention depth of the offset wells and predict the retention depth for the planned well.
  • LOT Analysis: Check the original charts for all LOTS of offset wells and use just the assured LOT in the wellbore stability prediction.
  • Creat a new prediction of minimum horizontal stress using Mathews & Kelly equation, based on study results done by Akram Elsherbiny and Tom Sinclaire.

The results
Saving 18 million dollar from the budget by decreasing the non-productive time costs and enhanced the well design, by deepening the conductor casing, and success to save a casing in silva-Da well.
