Title : Integration of GIS-based spatial analysis and geostatistical methods for soil pollution assessment and mapping in the Kucova Area, Albania
Abstract:
This study addresses the analysis of soil pollution in the Kuçova area through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis methods. Kuçova represents one of the earliest and most intensively developed oil-industry regions in Albania, where long-term petroleum extraction activities have significantly affected environmental quality, particularly soil resources. The primary objective of this research is to identify, assess, and spatially represent soil pollution levels by creating thematic maps that highlight areas exposed to high environmental risk.
The study methodology is based on the collection and integration of environmental, geological, and geospatial data, combined with laboratory analyses of soil samples. Data processing is conducted within a GIS environment using spatial interpolation techniques, density analysis, and geostatistical modeling to determine the distribution of pollutants across the study area. Through these methods, detailed pollution maps are generated, enabling the identification of critical contamination zones and the assessment of the environmental impacts of industrial activities.
The expected results aim to provide a scientific basis for the continuous monitoring of soil quality, support territorial planning processes, and contribute to the development of rehabilitation strategies for degraded areas. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the importance of integrating GIS technologies and spatial analysis techniques into environmental management and sustainable decision-making processes. The main contribution of the research lies in the development of an applicable methodology for assessing and mapping soil pollution in industrial regions, using the Kuçova area as a case study.
