Title : Elevating upstream digital transformation through enterprise architecture

Abstract:

Enterprise Architecture (EA) plays a crucial role in guiding and optimizing Upstream Exploration division through enhancing operational efficiency, reducing costs, and mitigating risks within the sector. By aligning technology capabilities with strategic objectives, Upstream EA facilitates seamless integration of diverse systems and processes, enabling real-time data analysis, decision-making, and resource optimization.

An architecture model is developed based on oil & gas core and support capabilities, providing a logical structure and identifying specific aspects that stand on their own. Architecture objects such as business processes, data, applications and technology are linked to respective business capabilities, providing insights into areas of improvement from business, data, application and technology perspectives. This model depicts the structure, behavior and investment of the organization’s digital landscape in relation to its business capabilities, revealing relationships or dependencies between processes, data, applications, and technology, along with information on the digital total cost of ownership for each business capability.

Managing the digital transformation of an E&P business is complex, with evolving digital technology and accumulated systems over time. Enterprise architecture practice brings a systematic approach to structure the workings of E&P business, aligning proposed technology changes with business strategy, conducting business process improvement, data management, application portfolio analysis, technology evaluation, and initiating digital investments.

This model is built on LeanIX EA tool and has been successfully executed for Exploration division with strong collaboration from different teams across the entire enterprise. An agile methodology was adopted to prioritize work using Microsoft Azure DevOps.

Audience Takeaway Notes:

  1. Understand how EA optimizes operational efficiency, reduces costs, and mitigates risks in the Upstream Exploration division.
